Dance Team Trip: Victoria April 8 - 10 First Notice

Dear Frank Hurt Dance Team Parents & Guardians,

Each year I strive to bring a performance oriented trip experience to our dance teams to strengthen the team bond/culture and broaden our performing and artistic horizons. This year we will be trying a new dance competition called Synergy. In partnership with the Surrey Dance Teacher’s Association, Frank Hurt teams have the opportunity to travel to Victoria and Sidney, BC with approximately 150 other dancers from local schools to perform. The trip would take place from April 8th-10th. The trip would also incorporate a variety of team building activities that strengthen our unity and team culture.
While myself and the other coordinating teachers are still working on the exact itinerary and working to ensure the trip is as economical as possible, we estimate that the cost of the trip would be approximately $150 per student. The students have already done some fundraising towards this price.  This cost would include all transportation, 2 nights accommodation in Victoria, daily breakfasts, the dance competition fees, a TOC to replace me on the 8th, and chaperone expenses.

The dance competition deadline is next week. This is a big cost ($1329.87). I need to know for sure all of the dance team dancers are going before I pay for them. If you allow your child to go please sign the permission form and have them return it to me this Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016.
I will have more information coming to you as soon as I can.

Field Trip: January 7: Surrey Secondary Dance Festival at the Bell Centre

  • There will be no place or time to change - so if you are in two dances make sure one is under the other or you can throw a costume piece over your first costume.
  • Block order is 3412 - come to the dance room at the start of block 3 and you return to classes after lunch.
  • Lunch - bring a lunch for this day. You will not be able to go out and purchase food. (unless you have a spare block in block 1 or 2)
  • You can only drink water in the theatre at the Bell centre.
  • You can eat before we leave and probably on the bus if you bring your garbage off the bus with you and don't make a mess :-)
  • You are not permitted to skip classes after lunch to get food. (Am I repeating myself?) I will let all staff know when we have returned. (Did I have a problem with this in the past or something?)
  • Please use the facilities before we leave Frank Hurt. Once we get to Sullivan I must escort you to the bathroom in small groups. I will do one run as soon as we get there and hopefully no more. I will be busy taking groups back to dance. You are not permitted to go into the school washroom unescorted because Sullivan is in session and should not be disturbed.
  • Be kind and use all of your manners with the volunteer ushers. Say please and thank-you and be genuine.
  • Thank the bus driver as you leave the bus.
  • Thank Ms. Sirianni if you see her backstage and thank her for organizing this event for us.
  • Invite your family to come and watch the show - it is free!!!

April
Friday, April 1: TBA Biennale Big Ideas Performances - All Teams at the Bell Centre - FREE (Performing the choreography we all created with Lara Barclay)

You have two different time challenges with this new piece:

There are only SEVEN classes with Lara and the day after the seventh is the performance. That isn't a lot of time to create something.
What else do you notice when you look at it on the calendar? That is right!! SPRING BREAK is right in the middle of the seven classes. That will be an extra challenge for us - not to forget what we have been working on. That means Ms. J is going to do a lot of video work and you are going to do a lot of practising over spring break so we don't have to do a lot of review when we meet again - so we can continue to move forward.

Theme

There is a theme for this performance and it is a mouthful: environmental volunteerism and social activism. We are meant to go on a field trip together that has to do with this theme.(Date TBA) We should be volunteering together somewhere and somehow adapting what we have seen into collaborative movement. (Lara and I were talking about this already and thinking visiting the Lower Eastside would lead us to some pretty intense movements - think about it -)

TO DO:

  • Free your schedule for your new practice days and the show day - the whole show day - there are two performances - one afternoon and one evening - I don't have exact times yet.
  • Think about a volunteer opportunity that interests you that we could do as a group - something you have always wanted to do that could change your perspective on life and inspire movement.
  • If you hear a song - share it with our group on Google Classroom.
  • If you see an image - share it as well - we will be projecting images on the scrim at the back of the stage at the Bell.

It isn't all dance - it is all genres of art. Here are some examples from the Vancouver Biennale:
