Block Battle!!!

These students had a choreography challenge. Each dancer drew a word from a basket. They had to choreograph 16 counts with that word in mind. They then had to teach their choreography to the other members of their group. As a class, we made these mini dances into one big dance. Watch and see what they came up with.

So... which is your favourite block??? Vote now!!

April Dance News

April Dance News

I like to call April DANCE MONTH and being that April 29 is International Dance Day that works here in Frank Hurt and everywhere else in the world. Frank Hurt Dance Department has been busy. I would first like to thank everyone who has helped us out parents, students, administration, and staff – we would not have been able to do it without you. So, what did we do? Check it out:

On Thursday April 8, 2010 we attended the Surrey Dance Festival at the Bell Centre for Performing Arts. All four dance classes performed a dance and we also got a chance to watch elementary school kids of all ages perform their dances. We were very impressed with the younger kids and how well they performed. I was even more impressed with my own because some of them were performing for the first time! It was extra special because our M.C. for the afternoon was our very own Ms. Morris. She did an amazing job of introducing the dance numbers and helping the little kids with the microphone.

That same evening we had our own Works in Progress show in the Frank Hurt Theatre. This performance is intended for immediate family only and I appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this. I would like to invite everyone back and their friends for our June show on June 10, 2010. The show went fairly smoothly and I believe that the students have a much clearer idea of how much work and energy it takes to put on a successful show.

Also, that same evening, we had our Kelowna meeting for the dance team and their parents. I would like to thank all of the parents that took the time out of their busy lives to come and listen to the rules and expectations for our trip. It is mandatory that I meet with all parents and this is very hard to do. It really helps when I have your cooperation. We were only missing seven parental units. Maybe next year we can go for 100%. (Goals are important)

On Monday, April 12, 2010 twelve of our dancers competed in the Outbreak Small Teams competition at North Surrey Secondary. This is a new competition which was added to give small teams a chance to perform at Outbreak. Outbreak has gotten so big that we had to cut the small teams last year and we really missed that element. I am glad that we were able to incorporate them back in. We had two senior trios competing and two breakdance crews in the battle. Jordan Edwards, Josh Cameron, and Mark Fagela got second place and Andrew Tran, Kevin Luong, and Matt Wong got sixth place. The Breakdance crew the Killabeez will be one of the three teams battling in Outbreak on the 24th. Congratulations boys!

Saturday, April 17 we left for Kelowna to attend Driven Dance Competition put on by Rutland Senior Secondary School. The students danced extremely well even though it was such a long day. Our Junior Breakdance team got 1st place, Senior Hip Hop got 4th, our senior trio with Jordan, Josh, and Mark got first place and our other senior trio with Andrew, Matt, and Kevin got third. During the breakdance circle at the end we had one injured student and we hope that Josh heals quickly so he can dance with us again. My favourite quotation from Josh is, “I realize now that the splits are not a dance move, they are a stretch.”

Finally, all dance teams and classes attended our final competition of the year, Outbreak. Here is how we did:
Block F Boys - Junior Class - FIRST!! (the Aladdin dance)
Block E Boys - Senior Class - Forth :)
Block G - Courtney goertson's Choreo 9/10 Class - Second!!
Block H - Junior Class - Forth :)
Senior Breakdance - forth
Senior Open - Fifth
Junior Breakdance - Second
Senior Hip Hop - ninth
Junior Hip Hop - fifth
Break Battle – Second

Happy Dancing!!

Audacity

Audacity

You can download Audacity at home by going to: audacity.sourceforge.net/download (or just Google Audacity!)

1. First you need to have music to edit. Your music needs to be in MP3 format. You can e-mail yourself the music, bring a CD, or your MP3 player with the USB cords.

2. If your music is in WAV format (you can hear play it on a normal CD player) then you have to convert it to an MP3. You can do this using Windows media player. Open the file in Media Player. Go to Options and change the format to MP3. Then RIP it. Remember to name and save the file somewhere you can easily find it again!

3. Open Audacity

4. Project: Import Audio – browse to find your song. You can only import one song at a time. (You can also drag and drop)

5. Edit your song. Highlight areas to add effects or listen to that one area. You should always listen to the area before you cut it so that you know that you have the correct selection. Little pointer hands will come up to make adjustments to your highlighted area if you go near the edge of your selection. You can use the magnifying glass to make the song bigger and this will make it easier to make the perfect cut.

6. Project: New Stereo Track. This is where you can paste the parts you want to make your version of the song.

7. When you are done creating your masterpiece, delete everything except for the one that you want to save. If you don’t delete all the other songs they will save as one song all combined.. very noisy!!

8. File: Export as WAV or MP3 (If you use SAVE AS it will not work!!!)

9. Finished!

Outbreak 2010 YouTubes

First.. thank-you to everyone - ushers, students, parents... this was an amazing day that will be remembered by all. Great job dancers!! You rock!! I hope everyone had an amazing time.

PEACE!

Outbreak Memo to Teachers, Dancers and Parents

FINAL OUTBREAK MEMO TO TEACHERS, DANCERS & PARENTS

WHEN: SATURDAY APRIL 24, 2010
WHERE: CHANDOS PATTISON AUDITORIUM AT PACIFIC ACADEMY
10238 – 168TH ST. SURREY, B.C.

PARKING: When you enter the parking lot the theatre is located to the far right of the school in a separate building. Please follow the parking lot attendants who will assist you in parking when the lots get full. There is a basketball tournament inside the school on Saturday so there will be plenty of traffic. If you are dropping off students there is a front drive round about that you may use but please drive with care as there will be many excited students.

TICKETS: Tickets are available at the door for $15.00. There will be discounts for small children.

Dancers must make their own transportation arrangements to and from the event.

All dancers will enter in the front of the theatre and register. Please have your I.D. and their will be security checks. Do not bring valuables. Students are not allowed to leave the Pacific Academy sight. There is a concession in the theatre with light snacks only so please bring nutritious food for snacks.

Teachers please line your students in alphabetical order for speed in registration.

Please have students in their costumes. The students will be able to do touch ups on hair and make-up in the change rooms backstage, but they should be ready to dance when they arrive.

When arriving the dancers will register, then an usher will take them to their seats where they can put down their bags. They will then be taken back stage the same way that they will travel when the competition is running. They will go through the back holding area, into the green room, then be called to the stage.

Back stage the green room is quite large and will hold two groups while one is in the wing and one group is on stage performing. There are change rooms equipped with toilets for dancers in the hold.

There is no food or drinks allowed in the theatre. Please respect the ushers as they are volunteers. We really want to be able to return to Chandos Pattison theatre in the future so please discuss with your classes proper behaviour. Do not put on make-up or use hair products while in the theatre, use the washrooms only. Please leave the washroom and change rooms tidy.

Students and spectators can only exit or enter the theatre between performances.

The show is very full and will run until 4 p.m with awards to follow. Students should be finished by 4:30ish.

When on stage please have all the dancers exit from the left staircase, so the next team can start as soon as possible. The stage area is not as large as the Bell centre so it is important that dancers exit from the front. If have the coach retrieve any items left in the green room.

Please ask your students to be a respectful audience. We love the clapping and words of encouragement but if someone is yelling all the way through a dance it can be very distracting for the dancers and the audience.

Finally, we want everyone to feel success at this event. If each one of us lets another person from a different school know that we appreciate their contribution to Outbreak it will build a feeling of community.

The talent that we as teachers have helped foster over the years is very evident at Outbreak. Give yourself a big pat on the back because you deserve it! Bravo to all the teachers and coaches you are doing an outstanding job!

Kelowna Parent Meetings - LAST TWO - Thursday, April 15, 4pm or Friday, April 16, 7am

Thank-you to all the parents that came to the parent meeting we had after the Works in Progress show. You made my life a lot easier. We have a lot of students involved with dance and it is a lot of work putting on these field trips. However, I believe that it is worth it. I believe the students get a great experience and they deserve it for all of the hard work they have put in to dance team throughout the year or years!!

I have not met parents of the following people:
Brendon Sharma
Cierra Germaine
Janica Sanfelices
Kevin Luong
LeiAnne Corpuz
Rheann Whelan

I am offering two final dates for you to meet with me. I don't want anyone to miss out so I look forward to meeting with you on either of the following dates:
Thursday, April 15, 4pm or Friday, April 16, 7am

I am sorry for the late notice but we have been very busy!!

Thank-you for your time and consideration!!

Volunteer Ushers for Outbreak: Please read

I really enjoyed the show last night! I can hardly wait to watch the video and see it all.

If you want to give me five ushers at 9:30 to put the names of the schools on the seats. We will have laminated signs that will be taped to rows to identify where students are seated. At 10 schools start to arrive and these girls can show the schools there sections.

The other ushers should be at the theatre around 12 before the general public arrives.

They all will be given Outbreak shirts and a flashlight. The shirt they can keep but the flashlight comes back to us.

They will be responsible for making sure people do not leave or try to enter the theatre while someone is performing. They will make sure that people do not bring food or drinks into the theatre. They will also keep an eye on anyone that is putting their feet on the backs of the chair in front of them. If anyone is being a total jerk, then the ushers will go and get our real security (my husband, Lucie's husband, the school liasons) and they will expel the people.

We will have a set of ushers at the bottom theatre doors to guide dancers back stage to the green room. So as you can see there job will be ushering people to their seats. When the general population comes in we will fill the bottom theatre first then the top.

LAST MINUTE REMINDERS
 Please email a final headcount for dancers and a final count for coaches/chaperones.
 Please send in any last minute ticket requests and we will do our best to fill them. Remember we were sold out in 2008 and we do not want to turn anyone away at the door, especially if they have travelled from afar to see their son/daughter dance.
 We have now passed the deadline for refunds. Plaques and ribbons have all been ordered. Please let us know of any changes to the program asap!
 We are selling clothing (sweatpants for $35.00 and t-shirts for $18.00). They are black with silver/grey logos. There will be a limited quantity available and we will open up the table at 5:00pm for any dancers that would like to purchase clothing as a souvenir.
 We are NOT selling DVD’s; however, the evening will be taped and we will be sending a copy to each school in the weeks that follow the competition.
 We are opening our doors to the public at 5:45pm and the show will begin at 6:30p
 We will be handing back the adjudication sheets at the end of the evening to each school’s coach, so please stick around to collect them.
 On the day of the competition:
o Please arrive at your scheduled check-in time (at the front entrance to the school).
o You will receive your coaches’ package and then be escorted to your dressing room. We will be using some classroom spaces as dressing rooms so please be sure to clean up after yourselves.
o You will then be shown to the gym where you will hand your music to the sound technicians. Please make sure that your CD’s are clearly labelled by school name and entry to avoid any confusion.
o Each school has 15 minutes of stage time to run through blocking or run their numbers with music. We will be strict on the time so be sure to run large team numbers first and then if time permits run your duets, trios, and quads.
o There will be a designated area for dancers to sit and watch. Dancers are responsible for keeping track of the entries and arriving backstage 2 dances before their own.

Warm up schedule
• You may choose to use your time however you like whether that be to block without music or run all your pieces once through with music. Note: Please hand in your music to the technicians once you have checked in and been escorted to the gym.

• When your time is up you must immediately exit the stage for the next school.

• There is ample space around the school to go and review dances, warm-up, or discuss anything as a team once your designated time is over.

• Your school’s check-in time is 15 minutes prior to your warm-up time. Please ask your bus drivers to drop you off at the front of the school as the rear doors will be locked. This is also where you will find the registration station and can pick up your coaches packages.
